Hot Dogs and Disrespect? I Think Not!

NY Jets QB Mark Sanchez was chastised by his coach for eating a hot dog on the sidelines during a recent game against the Raiders. Newsday quoted Jets coach Rex Ryan as saying “You’re disrespecting the opponent. You’re disrespecting the game.”

To atone for said disrespect, Sanchez donated 1,000 hot dogs and hamburgers to a New Jersey soup kitchen. His statement read in part:

“I want to apologize for that. I wasn’t feeling very good and didn’t eat much before the game, so I was feeling a little queasy. Toward the end of the game, I probably should have eaten one of those bars or something, but someone offered (a hot dog), so I grabbed it and tried to be discreet about it, but obviously not discreet enough. So I shouldn’t have done that, and it won’t happen again.”

Mark, judging by the outcome of the game, My Belly thinks that it should definitely happen again. If hot dogs give you the edge you need, then by all means, chow down! Check out this article from chinaview.cn about a college student who spent her summer managing a hot dog stand in Nanluoguxiang. It’s got a lot of interesting bits and pieces and it’s a short read. If you don’t want to travel all the way to Beijing to get your hot dog fix, just buy Get In My Belly from the app store and get to eating. Dumpster Diving Bear Can’t Get Hot Dog Fix Via iPhone

Here’s an amusing story from thedenverchannel.com in Colorado. Apparently a hot dog diner has been under siege by one or more hungry bears. They are looking to pack on some pounds and they’re heading straight for the hot dogs in the dumpster. Actually, they’re eating whatever they can get their grubby bear paws on leading into hibernation. If only they could satisfy their hunger pangs by playing Get In My Belly. They could take their iPhone into the wintering den and feast all season long! The article is pretty entertaining and the folks who deal with bears all the time are certainly very tolerant.

“Diner workers have reinforced the plastic Dumpster lid with two-by-four boards and trucking straps, but the hefty invader just jumps up and down until the lid caves in.”

“When the bear pulls on the bait, he gets a shot of bear-spray right in the face. And he just loves that. He still comes back,” Henkel said. “We’ve shot him twice with rubber buck bullets that the DOW gave us. That didn’t work at all. He doesn’t care.” Henkel stayed up one night hosing the bear with a hot-sauce cannon that sprays 30 feet. ”It doesn’t hurt bears, it just makes them burn a little bit. He came four times that night and we shot him four times with hot sauce and he still came back every time,” Henkel said.

There is no evidence to suggest that the hot dog loving bear in CO is of any relation to the Alaskan Cruncher seen in the below clip from 2006. Keep Eating (unless you’re a dumpster diving bear)!

For Fans of “Mad Men” and Hot Dogs…

Jon Hamm, who plays Don Draper on the AMC hit series Mad Men, was recently interviewed by David Letterman. The clip below is the two of them bantering about Hamm’s early work in Hollywood. The only reason we’re putting it up on the Get In My Belly Blog (aside from the fact that My Belly is a huge fan of Mad Men) is that hot dogs are featured in the story. I apologize for the commercials at the beginning. Ironic that a blog about an iPhone app posts a video that features a commercial for Sprint in the clip. Good times. It was so much easier before the networks had any clue about digital content. Watch Mad Men. Keep eating!

Hot Dog Crime Spree… I Swear, My Belly is Innocent!

Three stories popped up over the last week and it appears that there is a national crime wave involving hot dogs and hot dog vendors.

Is this guy branching out? Or is there a HotDoglar?

Case #1 From the AP News: A man was sentenced to 18 months in prison for “stealing a hot dog from a man in Elm Park in Worcester in August after flashing what appeared to be a gun. Police reports said Judd grabbed the hot dog from the victim and began to devour it, spilling mustard all over his shirt. Police said when Judd was later arrested, he was carrying a pellet gun and pocket knife.”

Case #2 from WINKnews.com : Somebody stole a hot dog cart that was chained to the outside of a restaurant in Florida. ”That’s a 2500 dollar cart/investment, plus all the money I’m losing not having it out there making money,” said the owner.

Case #3 from PressOfAtlanticCity.com: ”A hot-dog vendor was arrested after officers found he was selling marijuana along with his wieners, police said. After a complaint was called in to the Special Investigation Office, Detective Anthony Abrams posed as a customer at the hot-dog cart stationed at Mississippi and Pacific Avenues, police said. He bought a hot dog for $4, and after striking up conversation with the vendor, bought a glass vial of suspected marijuana for $10, police said.”

Maybe this is a result of the economic woes still faced by many in the U.S. There are plenty of shops and vendors who can sell you a great hot dog without any illegality. If you want to feel like a criminal while you eat, check out Felony Franks in Chicago. My Belly is in a daze. What just happened?!?! nickhansen stepped up and crushed all other bellies on the leader board. CRUSHED! 105? 105? Can that be topped? We’ll see. I didn’t think we’d see anybody break 60, but now that nickhansen broke 100 I can’t even guess the ceiling for a belly. Be on your guard, folks. 250 1/2 Pickled Jalapeños? In 9 minutes? Seriously.

We were contacted by AKA Media Inc. with compliments on the app and news on an exciting eating competition that took place on 9-13. The third annual La Costeña Feel the Heat Jalapeño Eating Championship Challenge took place in Chicago and the eaters put away record numbers of pickled peppers. Sonya Thomas took the belt from Pat Bertoletti by eating 250 1/2 to his 240. Third place finisher Eric Booker ate 158. In nine minutes. Hopefully the competitors left room for an ice cream chaser, because that many pickled peppers are making their presence known coming and going. Let’s all take a step back and gape in wonder at the eating prowess of the winner. 250 pickled peppers in 9 minutes? Unbelievable. Oh, by the way, she only weighs 105 pounds.
